I don't think it was a hoax, just excitement over poor communications. Life is starting to look less likely. NASA is going to give the details tomorrow. It appears that they found Perchlorate in the deeper soil samples. That makes it more hostile to life. It's also possible that they brought the Perchlorate with them.
Wouldn't it suck if they did find life and it turned out to be a bunch of nasty crap that hitched a ride from Earth on Viking and Pathfinder!
In my on tests, the Abenas are doing nicely and the P2P is too.
