You need to soak your nappies befor washing them and plastic pants only need a rinse with warm water. I just use ordinary washing powder and some fabric softener. Washed regularly they will last for ages. Plastic pants do get brittle with regular use but are not very expensive to replace.
Disposables work out far more expensive.
