I make my own nappies from towels that I pick up in places like TK Maxx where you can get some really good quality towels at a reasonable price. I used to get towelling off the roll in a fabric shop, but the quality was never that good. I started off using a pair of old plastic pants as a template - just cut them down the seams, lay them flat on your towel and cut round. As Nappy_&_Pilchers said, you do really need to hem them as they last longer that way. I just use a sewing machine set on a zig-szg stitch and go round the edges - you don't really need to turn it over. Your first one probably won't be perfect, but you'll improve with practice :-)
