its not really a chemical reaction taking place. the SAP is actually like a collapsed screen.. the water takes up the the holes in the screen and makes the screen expand by water tension... and yes the SAP can be dried out and re wetted... SAP can be used for lots of other things.. like you can mix it in soil for water hungry plants to keep them fed... or firedepartments can use it to put out fires
