Plastic covers, though you may covet them because they were what you wore as a baby, were done away with because of technological innovation. The cloth-like covers are breathable and offer more comfort - and work just as well as the plastic ones. Disposables will never be good for the environment, despite our affection for them, but that wasn't the reason for the change.
I'm a big "environmental whack-o" and an AB, and I think disposables should go the way of leaded gas, despite the fact that I still use them every once in a while. I can separate my politics from my personal feelings, and so should the OP.
