CHAPTER THREE
Dave spent the entire weekend inside reading his computer books and working on his laptop to avoid having to go outside and face the ridicule he was sure was waiting for him. By late Sunday night he had cleaned the entire apartment and packed up all but a few essential items he would need to survive until he could find another college to transfer his credits to and get moved.
He hated the idea of having to move again so soon but it was better this way he felt. In a new town he would be able to start over and would be able to work doubly hard to make sure no one ever found out his shame again. It wasn't fair he thought, but it was inevitable that he would screw up and someone would find out.
He hated his entire life at this point and was tempted to just give in and make the world a better place by just ending it all for good. “Why bother moving when it will just be the same anywhere I go? Besides, it's not like I have any reason to continue existing after all that I've done.
First I get my friend killed. Then I force mom and dad to divorce over what happened. To make it worse mom spent all that money on me for the hospital bill and later for all the diapers I had to wear. I even drove her to suicide due to my screw up of surviving when I should not have. No wonder Dad hates me and every woman wants nothing to do with me. I'm a freak and don't deserve anything less.”
Dave turned off his laptop and decided to go for a walk to get some fresh air and to think about whether to move again or to just finally give in to the pain and end it once for all. Dave never really even noticed when it started to rain nor did he really care in his current frame of mind. For almost three hours he wandered around the darkest back roads of the town until he began to shiver from being drenched and cold.
Dave turned and began to make his way back to his apartment in order to get changed and get some sleep. He never noticed the two guys come up behind him. One of them hit him hard in the back with a bat and he went down in agonizing pain. The other one kicked him in the left side with steel toed boots and he screamed in pain as ribs broke and his left lung was punctured.
The two men said nothing as Dave lay wheezing in pain and coughing up blood. They merely riffled through his pockets and stole his wallet with only ten dollars left in it. As an afterthought they stripped him naked except for just his now soaking wet diaper. After a few more kicks to his left side they ran off laughing while Dave lay wheezing and barely awake.
Dave tried to crawl to safety but every inch of him screamed in pain when he moved. He coughed hard and saw stars as he lay panting and bleeding in the middle of the road. He made one last effort to move and was barely awake when the headlights from a car shined down on him. He kept trying to crawl to safety and finally passed out from pain as he thought he heard someone calling his name.
Julie decided to stop by Dave's apartment and try to talk to him even though it was dark out and almost 11:00 pm. She had just gotten into her car when it began to rain. It was raining heavily but she was certain she could find her way across town to his place without too much difficulty. She wanted to talk to him and try to let him know that she would never tell anyone else his secret.
Julie had to detour once due to one of the roads being closed for construction and ended up on a back road in a very empty part of town. By the time she found her way back to a more familiar road it had stopped raining but was a bit chilly out. She wished she had brought a jacket with her and settled for turning on the heater in her car.
Julie came around a bend in the road and thought she saw something ahead so she slowed down. “most likely another roadkill deer. They are always getting hit in this area it seems.” Her thoughts were interrupted as she got closer and noticed it someone laying in the road and barely moving.
She put on her flashers and stopped to see if she could help whoever it was.
She was shocked and horrified to see Dave laying bleeding badly in the road. “Dave! Can you hear me? Don't move! I'm calling an ambulance!” Julie flipped open her cell phone and cursed when she found out she was out of cell range.
“I hope I'm not doing more harm than good but I'm not leaving you to die!” without thinking about it she ran aback to her car and grabbed her emergency blankets and water out of her trunk then put the blankets on the back seat of her car to help keep him covered up.
She ran back up to him and was worried when he had passed out. She care fully picked him up and put him in the backseat of her car and then covered him in the blankets to warm him up. She used a wet cloth to try to clean up the blood and was horrified to find he seemed to be bringing up more blood with every labored breath.
She moved some more items around in the back seat of the car and managed to get him lightly blocked from falling off the seat and onto the floor. She then shut the door and then went and closed her trunk before getting back in her car. She put the car in gear and sped off towards the main roads as fast as she could safely go on the rain slickened roads.
A few minutes of driving brought her out onto the main roads that had better drainage on them and were better lit. She floored it and headed straight for the hospital ignoring the honks from a few other annoyed drivers as she sped along in a desperate effort to save Dave's life. The wheezing and blood worried her and she almost failed to notice the police car behind her with it's lights going until the siren caught her attention.
For once in her life she was grateful to be pulled over. She quickly pulled over and got out waving franticly at the officer to come talk to her. The officer was a little shocked at her behavior but saw the look on her face and figured something odd was going on. Nothing could have prepared him for what he saw when she opened up the back door of her car. He saw the young man laying on the seat and obviously in very bad shape. He carefully uncovered Dave and was shocked to see ribs sticking out through his side and the attempted bandages on his side.
Julie was almost frantic as the officer immediately called for an ambulance. She explained carefully to the officer where she had found Dave at and that she had tried to call for an ambulance but her cell phone was out of tower range. The officer retrieved his own first aid kit and did what he could until the paramedics arrived and took over for him.
They examined Dave carefully and put an I.V. Into him before carefully loading him into the back of the ambulance and then heading to the hospital at full speed. Julie was allowed to follow the ambulance so she could give the doctors any information they might need.
