Well folks, I started writing a new story and here it is so far. I apreciate any comments on it good or bad.
Amanda was sweating heavily and breathing hard as she topped the hill on her mountain bike. She was doing great and had almost a full three minute lead on her nearest competitor in the race. She raced over the course hard and fast doing almost 30 Miles an hour in a few places of the tough course. She could see the finish line just up ahead as she raced the course. She came around a hard right turn almost bottoming out her suspension as she did so. She raced her mountain bike over some hard rocky ground on her way to winning her first race.
One last hard left turn and then a steep downhill to the finish line found her crossing the finish line at 32 miles an hour. She pulled hard once more on her brake levers to stop when it happened. The front brake cable snapped as her front wheel hit something hard and folded in half. Amanda flew over the front of her bike and hit the ground face first as she slid over hard rocks and into a safety fence. Paramedics rushed to the scene as other bike riders crossed the finish line and avoided the wreck. The paramedics had almost made it to her when another rider had his bike hit the wrecked remains of Amanda's bike and slammed hard into amanda taking them both over a small cliff. they fell ten feet to the rough ground below.
It was almost another ten minutes before the paramedics managed to get down to them. The other rider had managed to avoid serious harm, but Amanda was not so lucky. The other rider was desperately trying to staunch the massive flow of blood coming from her when the paramedics arrived and took him off to get his broken arm set. Amanda had slammed hard into the ground and landed on a sharp branch that punched through her side deeply. Amanda was fortunate that her helmet had worked perfectly to protect her head. she was barely awake and could only barely breathe as the paramedics staucnhed the flow of blood from her side. Amanda passed out as the paramedics carefully moved her up and out of the area she had fallen into. The last thing she heard was was the emergency helecopter as it aproached.
Amanda woke up ten hours later in the hospital and almost screamed as a wave of pain hit her. It took a few moments for her to catch her breath as nurses came flooding into her room. Her sudden and dramatic increase in heart rate had set off the alarms on the machines she was hooked into. Upon seeing that she had finally regained consciousness and nothing was truly wrong, the head nurse sent all the others back to their posts. "Relax dear and take a couple of deep breaths. You're in the hospital now recovering from a bad wreck and emergency surgery as well. Don't try to speak either. your helmet saved your head, but you clipped something hard across your throat and you vocal cords are very tender right now."
A doctor walked in a few moments later and began to check the readings on all the machines before turning to Amanda. You're a very lucky woman to have survived with as little injury as you did. Your helmet is ruined as is your bike. I saw the race and was cheering for you though. You just crosed the finish line when the accident happened to you. you hit pretty hard. The top front of your helmet is caved in and broken, but it saved your life I'd say. As for the pain, it should go away in a few minutes. I set the machines here to givee you a mild dose of painkiller every hour to help dull the pain. You ripped your right side up pretty badly and have a lot of ugly looking cuts there. It will be tender for a few weeks until it all heals. when you landed and then went over the cliff you hit a small tree and took a branch with you. It ripped through your side down near your lower abdomen and almost killed you. the other guy that landed on you managed to stop the worst of the bleeding beofre I got there with the rest of the paramedics."
amanda nodded slightly and tryed to speak. This only caused pain in her throat and she quickly ceased trying to speak. The doctor pulled out a notepad and pen for her and handed it to her. Amanda smiled lightly as she wrote on the pad, "How long until I can speak?" She then handed the notepad back over to the doctor and waited as heread it.
"Your throat should be better by morning. you only bruised it heavily and lightly bruised your vocal cords in the process. Now I want you to get some rest and I'll be back in tomorow when you have have gotten more rest and we can talk some more then. I'll give you all the details on what kind of shape you are in then. you should even be able to talk then as well as long as you don't try talking at all untill then. trying to talk right now will be painfull and only prolong the condition. Any questions?"
amanda held out her hand for the note pad. she received it and then wrote, "I take it this means I won't be playing as star quarterback for the Vikings this monday?" how is the other guy?" She smiled a little more as she handed the pad back to him to read.
The doctor laughed a bit as he read it and then smiled as he responded, "I think they're going to have to make do without you this game. As for the other man, he broke his left arm in three places and broke two ribs. He somehow ignored his pain long enough to save your life though. He's at home right now resting and yes, he wanted to know if you were going to make it allright. I gave him permision to come visit you tomorow afternoon for a few minutes. Now get some more rest and We'll talk tomorrow.
Amanda nodded sleepily as he walked out of the room. She never even noticed the trophy setting for setting a new track speed record and a trophy for winning the race setting on a small table a little ways from her. She felt something was not quite right, but couldn't figure out just what at the moment. she fell asleep as the painkillers kicked in and never noticed that she was wetting her diaper. For that matter, she never even quite realized she was wearing a diaper due to the painkillers making her sleepy.
Amanda woke up early the next morning as one of the nurses was getting ready to change her diaper that she had soaked and messed in the night. Amanda was shocked to see the nurse holding the largest disposable diaper she had ever seen. She then realized there was an uncomfortable bulk between her legs and a horrible smell as well. As the nurse turned down the blankets and lifted Amanda's gown the smell got worse. Amanda looked down in shock, horror, and then shame as she realized that not only was she wearing a diaper, but she had apparently used it as well.
The nurse seemed to not notice the smell as she went about the buisiness of quickly cleaning her up and changing her into a clean diaper. The nurse rolled up the soiled diaper and tossed it into a red plastic bag followed by a pair of exam gloves. She tied the bag shut and disapeared from the room with it, leaving Amanda wondering just what was going on that she now needed diapers. Amanda's sides still hurt and she could, with careful probing feel the presence of of stitches in several places. Amanda intended to ask the nurse how badl she was injured, but the nurse did not return.
Amanda pressed the call button and waited for someone to answer it. A young nurse walked into the room a few moments later. "What can I get for you Amanda?"
Amanda cleared her throat as she tryed to speak. her voice came out as a barely audible squeak as she tryed to speak. The young nurse put a finger to Amanda's lips as she spoke again. Don't try to speak too much yet. your throat is still sore and neeeds a little more time I think." The young nurse reached into a pocket and handed Amanda a pen and a notepad. Amanda quickly scribbled out a question and handed the notepad back to the nurse. The nurse read it and and then set down next to Amanda in a chair.
"You damaged your spinal cord as well in that wreck you had. It has affected you control at least for the moment so we put you into incontinent briefs to handle the problem. I'm not sure how bad the damage is, but I do know you are lucky to be alive after a wreck like that. The doctor is due in to talk with you sometime later this morning and he can far better explain your injuries than I can. As for how I know of the wreck you had, I saw a replay of it on the news after they brought you in. Anything else you'd like to ask? Amber nodded yes and began to write out another question.
The nurse read the question and then answered her, "Yes, you are able to walk and ride still, but I would recomend waiting untill after you get the doctor's permision before trying anything much. I know it is no fun to be stuck inside on such a nice day, but you have someone who has been asking to see you for a while now. Do you feel up to a visitor for a few minutes? Amanda nodded her head yes and wondered who it could be as the nurse left to go get her visitor.
The nurse returned a few minutes later with Amanda's mother. Amanda smiled instantly upon seeing her mother come into the room. Amanda scribbled out a question on the notepad and handed it to her mother. She read the note and smiled at Amanda. "I got an emergency phone call from the race officials about a half hour after you were hurt. They told me you had gone down hard and then over a cliff head first. They told me you had been immediately airlifted to the hospital and were not certain if you would even survive. I dropped everything and came here as soon as I could. I saw the video of your race on the T.V. as I sat in a motel room last night waiting for the doctor to call me with any news at all. You won that race about a full minute ahead of your nearest competitor who unfortunately crashed into you a few seconds after you crossed the finish line and wrecked. I was told by the nurse about your some of your injuries, including your control problems as well. Don't worry though, we'll work through it all somehow."
