Its funny you should mention emotion. If anything, music today absolutely WALLOWS in it. Part of the reason I despise most 'emo' bands is because they make their feelings the centerpiece of every song, without the musicianship to back it up.

That said, yes: musicians today, for the most part, aren't as passionate as they were a few years ago. Vedder, Cobain, Cornell, Layne Staley et all poured themselves into nearly every song. They never wanted to or expected to be famous, so they had no need to engage in posturing. Nowadays, musicians seem to have preconcieved notions of #1 singles and MTV awards. A lot of them simply don't care anymore. It isn't just rock either. When Chuck D rhymed, he was making a statement (even if it was provocative and disagreeable) about society, law, race, etc. When Jay Z rhymes, he's making a statement about how he likes to get fucked up and drink a lot. Urg!

OK, I'll cease ranting.
