While I have never personally felt an acute feeling of misery for weeks on end, I can attest to the fact that this is possible. I know several people diagnosed with severe clinical depression and they describe it just that way. I would be inclined to describe my love for my wife in a similar way. The "severity" is sometimes more and sometimes less from day to day, but it never goes away.
