Yeah, though I doubt it was intended to be incendiary I realy wouldn't be surprised if that was indeed born out an element of race.
The good news is that from what you tell me, he's seen as a positive charcter. Usualy in media, ethnic groups begin as enemies, then move to friends, but when the move it can take some time to shed the steriotypical aspects of the charecter. I'm not sure when the show was produced but it may be that it was on the tail end of overt racism.
Or maybe its just nothing,
