Actually, gay marriage is an attempt by the gays to have a way to cement legally their long-term commitments to each other. Nothing could be more moral.

However, I'll agree with you on this point: Marriage should be a religious proposition. We need to get the state (especially the IRS) out of the business of recognizing these religious ceremonies. That is, the IRS should not be allowed to ask if anyone is married or not, and it should not be making taxes work differently for such couples.

That state of affairs (Married, filing however on your income taxes) looks to me an awful lot like a law regarding an establishment of religion to me!

And so, for that matter, does going down to the county courthouse to get a "Marriage License" (that's how you do it here in VA) seems to me an unnecessary interference by the state in people's religion.

So are you willing to accept the logical consequences of getting the (United) state out of the marriage business???
