I'm also an atheist, if that matters at all. I think all "marriages" should be "civil unions" with the legal/taxation privileges that come with traditional "marriage." Then, those who wish to do so can also have a "marriage" ceremony at their church/house of worship. If churches don't wish to marry certain people, I won't agree with their decision, but I also think that's their business.
I guess this whole debate proves how much meaning can be attached to a word. I don't really care what it's called, as long as I someday have the chance to have a public commitment ceremony (there's a good name!) with the one I love.
