I can recall some retired hospital matron being interviewed on a television show many years ago where she was recounting her work as a junior nurse in a mental hospital around the turn of the century.

The junior nurses got all the shit jobs (pun intended) and that included dealing with large numbers of incontinent patients.

She spoke about wrestling with over-sized, wet cloth nappies and unco-operative patients.

As was common in those days, the management regime was more about orderliness for the staff rather than the needs of the patient.

Accordingly, patient’s nappies were not changed as required. Instead, a routine schedule was run whereby all patients were changed “five times a day whether they needed it or not!”.

Things would have been pretty ugly since waterproof pants didn’t appear until well into the 21st century. I recall another snippet of information that sometimes, woollen overpants were worn on top of nappies, the natural amount of lanolin in wool having a slightly waterproof effect.

Even earlier, I recall a BBC docu-drama: “The madness of King George”. George III (British monarch: 1760-1801), suffered some form of temporary dementia during which a regent had to rule. At the depth of his madness, the movie showed him laying on a stretcher gibbering, wearing a normal topcoat but nothing more than a crude, grey cloth nappy (uncovered by pants or waterproofing) at his loins. I expect it made changing him simple.

The BBC’s history folk are rather careful with attention to detail so I fully expect there to be some degree of historical accuracy in this.

The whole history thing on this I find rather interesting (in an academic sense) but there’s precious little information out there…

I'd be quite pleased if anybody else can contribute something a little more substantial.
