I recoded the whole site about 5 months back and introduced code to prevent external sites linking to my images directly.
I did this because I have to pay for my bandwidth, and didn't like the monthly bills I was getting. Once I looked closely at my log files I identified many (more than 2 hands worth of fingers) sites that were just linking to my images (and letting me pay for hosting and bandwidth).
The introduction of some simple "anti-linking" code ensures that those accessing my site from any other site will get redirected to the front "main door" page... so people know what they are clicking through to. This happened as the result of being linked to by many (main stream) blogs in a short span of time.
As long as you don't attempt to link to images directly (and use the mechanism I have provided for accessing the images) then you ought to be fine.
It's disappointing that you are having problems. Are you using some kind of fancy proxy service or anonymising service to view my site? Maybe you have a "non mainstream" browser -- or one that has been modified to "cloak" the referer details?
I would be keen to hear from anyone else experiencing difficulties accessing the images on my site.
