Well, I used baby diapers as inserts. I slit only the shell, and make one long slit all the way from the front to the back, in the middle of the diaper.
I have noticed that after a first wetting, the outer diaper is hardly even damp - the color strip doesn't even change. This is usually good for about 3 wettings with common diapers, but much more if you are using something like Abena X Plus.
