I suggest the northern route -- via Black Hills of south dakota, then to duluth, north side of lake superior (note: car must be in good shape, the gas stations are about 150 miles apart past Thunder Bay, and expect to see a cop so hold the speed limit), then down to Niagra falls, (or possibly around far side of lake Huron or possibly through Sioux Ste Marie with huge bridge and locks), might want to stop by La Ronde at Montreal.

If you come south via Pennsylvania, Falling Water (Frank Loyd Wright) is a cool place to visit, as is Kentuck Knob, also Frank Loyd Wright.

It all depends on your interest...I kind of suggest natural wonders, with a secondary on engineering wonders.

On the standard route (I-70) go see the St Louis Arch -- but be very careful in their rush hour traffic, last time I was there I found myself looking at the underside of a flat-bed semitrailer bouncing down the road at 50 mph.

Might want to look up Mammoth Caves, Ky. Berkely Springs (nice hot BATH). All depends on your routing and desires. The delaware water gap (NE PA) is a very nice drive.
