The problems didn't happen, so they weren't worth preventing seems to be your logic. The Y2K1 glitches were a reasonable sample of what would have happened on Y2K if no effort had been taken.

Umm, those Y2K1 glitches were of reasonably large scale -- including some banking problems. Second, Y2K1 problems are closely enough related to Y2K problems that a reasonably conscientious programmer would have checked for them.

They weren't the massive scale that Y2K doomsdayer's predicted -- but they were unexpected after all of the (as noted by my cite) largely successful efforts to prevent such problems. They were indicative that significant banking problems probably would have occurred if preventive measures had not been taken.

Money was always the main concern -- most of the small scale embedded machine control systems at that time didn't know what the year was in any case, and certainly didn't calculate with it.

So it's kind of like the ounce of prevention -- since nobody gets polio or tetanus (absolutely awful diseases) they weren't worth vaccinating for, right?
