I remember reading once that in England in the beggining of the 20th century they had a big problem in that two thirds of their population was in the service industry for the same general reason, production/manufacturing was cheaper in the colonies(esepcialy since the colonies were also often the source of material extraction). A 2/3 service sector economy may not seem near as bad today, but it was huge then. I remember this lack of national industry was cited as one of the reasons the Empire collapsed so hard.

Perhaps the American Empire is experiencing the same problem, is it possible it will experience the same fate?
