I agree with you that compared to many earlier Anime and even films the quality of dubs has vastly increased. I didn't think the dubs were awefull, but the show was just so good that the slight loss from the dubs annoyed me.
Actualy I think the actors did a very good job with the dubs, my big problem though was the choice of actors. They were all very good, but they were miscast at least IMHO. The biggest problem for me being that I felt that Spike and Jet didn't sound all that different. And Spike came off too much like a slacker (-:
I can certainly see why you liked it, it was still very awesome, but in anime just like forein films I think that all elements make a film/show. The sound of an actors voice is just as important as the look on his face and where the camera is placed. Changing the voice actors to me is the same as changing the picture to for instance, be more pleasing to a western asthetic.
Of course I do also have a giant stick up my ass. And not the kind I'm gonna drop into my diapers either ;-P
