I still have one of my rubber sheets from my childhood, its pink and very soft rubber and it smells lovely, I will never part with it. I am disabled and in nappies and rubber pants all the time and when I used to spend time in hospital as a child in the early seventies there was always a rubber mattress cover on the bed and then a cotton sheet then a smaller rubber sheet covered with a small drawsheet but they dont seem to use them these days in most hospitals.
