I can't remember ever wetting the bed, and don't think I had any bedwetting incidents past the age of 3. I was out of nappies during the day by the age of 2, and am pretty sure I gained night-time control pretty soon afterwards.
I have tried to have a true bedwetting accident 9whilst asleep) but with no success, I find it hard to wet in bed even when awake if I am half-asleep, or have been asleep. I can wet the bed before going to sleep, but if I awake in the middle of the night I need to fully wake up and sit up slightly in bed and/or lift my knees up in order to actually start peeing. Only once have I been able to wet the bed whilst still half-asleep and without having to move my position in bed. I expect if someone was a bedwetter they would find it much easier to feel comfortable with wetting the bed (although I would like to wet the bed, there is something holding me back which i have to work to overcome before I can start to pee) as they will have memories of wet beds, plus as you said, they may be 'wired' differently.
It would be interesting to find out how many of the bedwetters of this board who can achieve genuine bedwetting incidents were bed-wetters as children/teens and if most of those who struggle to wet the bed in their sleep were dry from an early age.
