I remember my kid sister being put back into nappies at night at around age 5 or so after a persistent couple of weeks of bedwetting. The tantrum she threw after being pinned back into a nappy just before bed on the first night of this regime was legendary.

After that, she would usually bellow from her bed in the small hours that she “needed to be taken to the toilet!” After one or two of such cries had woken most of the household, a gruff and sleepy reply would be shouted from the master bedroom along the lines of “just do it in your nappy” and peace would be restored.

I don’t know what the bedwetting was all about since whilst in nappies, she did a pretty good job of waking herself up and yelling for help. I also don’t think that habituating her to deliberately peeing in a nappy in bed at night is much of path to solving the problem either but there you go.

I can’t recall her being told ever just to wet her bed – that would be just too much washing but with lots of kids with a couple in nappies, I guess folks just figured that one more wet nappy in the morning was less effort than getting up at 1am.
