Wow, slept directly on a plastic sheet, your mom was desperate! Question, without a cloth sheet to absorb your wetting, seems like it would have puddled around you and in time run off the plastic onto the mattress or floor. No?
Strangely, it was just the opposite for me, mom placed the flannel covered rubber sheet under both a mattress pad and bottom sheet. So when the bed was wet there was considerable laundry. Expect this was one of the reasons I was often diapered at bedtime.
