I think you raise a really important issue, but to me it's not one of sexual vs nonsexual but more like 'does something have to be arousing to be sexual.' sexuality isn't just about having orgasms, it's also a complex expression of the desires and feelings that inform personality and worldview and what have you.
Personally, my lg-ness is always present to some degree at all times i'm relating to my daddy-type. doesn't mean i'm always sucking my thumb and thinking about my toys, just that it's ready to switch over to that at any time, whether as a sexual thing or just a form of intimacy or relaxation. i imagine that most vanilla couples have similar experiences with more mainstream forms of eroticism.
as to the the second part of your question, most d/lg stories and pics are porn. is the sex act representative of the whole of an erotic interaction? nother post entirely.
