There are many ways for a person to respond to you. The most obvious would be to return a witty reply. If I was concerned that there were other people around, I could have just approached you later when you were alone. My point is by now you would have piqued my curiosity. I'm not usually someone who puts people on the spot so I would probably just see if you brought the topic up again on your own. I would however find ways to make that easier for you to do by steering the conversation or choosing a helpful setting.
