Meanwhile, with Adblock plus installed, no warnings. It's probably something nasty being served up by one of their banner ad networks. Browsing adult websites without Adblock (and preferably noscript or similar) is like your computer sharing needles. Sooner or later, it's gonna catch something unpleasant.

Meh. JavaScript is quite safe. The last exploit I know of for SpiderMonkey (firefox) was quite a while ago. For v8 (Chrome) I can' remember any. They're quite rare and therefore expensive. They won't be used on you. Java is mostly fine too, as long as you don't accept their "safety warnings". Now what you have to look out for are Adobe products. Flash is bad, but Adobe Reader is a disaster. Oh and don't use Internet Explorer of course.

It's not that Javascript itself is inherently unsafe, it's fine. It's just that it gives the domain (and the domains of any, ad partners, etc) the ability to do far more of the annoying shit that adult sites are known for like popups, popunders, annoying "Do you really want to leave this site?" boxes, those stupid fake Facebook chat things, auto-playing unpleasant video ads, etc. They all go away if you block scripting. Of course, you can always permanently or temporarily allow scripting on a domain for sites that need it and don't abuse it as well as allow flash elements (videos, mostly) on a case-by-case basis. All that shit also tends to really slow stuff down.

It's amazing how much quieter, faster and nicer the web can be if you don't allow scripting by default.
