brown, you only need to slow the motility of your colon. This allows the absorbtion of more moisture, leaving (creating) firm/hard poops.
Over the holidays, I achieved that, somewhat by accident. I had been taking loperamide daily, and had to take a cold med when my head started closing up. The combination worked extremely well. On at least two occasions, I had very hard poops that took a long time to get out (one was like 45 min); one was 10" long, the other 11".
Now, if you are ready for a bit of pain, when it stretches you to the limit, ready to walk (rather than sit) to let it take its time getting out (which you probably can't because you are too impatient), and relish in having a really, really big bulge (probably not as big as mine) in your pants, then perhaps there is a combination for you in there somewhere.
Now, don't you go out and get all the things I mention. If your 'window' of opportunity is short, and probably too near, none of this will work for you - it takes a bit of time for these things to begin working right, and the design is for more long term effect.
And to answer your last question, no, it is probably not a good idea to take these things unless they are necessary, and then not for a long time.
