Actually, I have heard that they are developing a mechanism (separate from a cam though) that will detect and separate odors, convert them to specific electronic signals (of some kind) and a receiver that will take these signals and provide a reasonable estimate of the original odor mechanically. The detector would be little more complicated than a video camera, but the receiver would be MUCH more of an issue. And calibration of the receiver would be a major issue - one could have flowers smelling like Jane's poop.
From what I heard, every odor is presumed to be composed of a specific combination of base odors, that, when put back together, produce a reasonable semblance of the original odor. I doubt that the strength of the odor is duplicatable though, but I guess we'll see; plus I am guessing that is not a major factor.
I do sense one problem though - the market for this thing may be limited to flower shops, perfume sales, and our little clic. That could make it rather expensive.
