By all means, do it solo, but make sure you have the right mindset. It's not going to be easy unless you've been doing it as frequently as one of us, so be prepared for a difficult time, or better yet, eat like 2 bran muffins and drink a liter of water beforehand to help things along. Budget something like an hour for effort time and cleanup. Shitting your pants alone isn't going to bring you any physical enjoyment-- you already mentioned you were averse to the idea and really, who can blame you? We're the unusual ones, not you. The only thing it'll get you is an accurate account of how it will feel when and if you do it just for him. No one here should be fooling themselves into thinking that there are good chances that you might enjoy it.
What you WILL enjoy, like layla said, is what it does to him. When you do it alone, take notes. Be able to describe what you did, where you were, what you were wearing, how big it was, how fast it came out, what the consistency was, any and all details, and be prepared to relate them to him because they are going to drive him nuts! When you tell him what you did (and you should) try to avoid thinking about how it made YOU feel-- think of the act in the abstract and focus instead on how it's making HIM feel.
Be prepared for some intimate action after you tell him (or during, if you're a good storyteller!) If he's a decent guy, he's going to hesitate to initiate anything out of concern for you... he may fear that you were turned off completely by the act; he may even feel guilty that he "forced" you to do it. Assuage his fears, make sure he knows that you love him and want him to be happy, and that you did this of your own free will. Then give him a handjob or something because you probably would want him associating sexual pleasure with this sort of scenario.
