It would be a very unusual woman who has not been desperate herself.
Hence, I assume she was telling this story to set herself apart from the man who was desperate, and demonstrate to her friends how disgusting being desperate is while not letting on her own moments.
Seems one could have casually mentioned that we all have those moments when we have to go.
