how do girls "manage," you ask?
on one recent occasion (within the last few months)i was at a high school homecoming football game, where the two porta-pottys were pretty bad. the way they were set up, the seat was in a slimy ledge, so there was no way to straddle the seat without sitting down or, alternatively, climbing up on the ledge, which would involve way too much touching of icky interior wall surfaces. so i went under the temporary bleachers. it was dark and noisy - no one noticed. and in other situations where a tree or bush is handy, i'll always take that before using any outhouse (such as when camping). and, of course, i would never, ever use skanky beachfront facilities when the lovely ocean is available.
i can usually wait a long while, but there have certainly been times when i've had to contemplate what i'd do if desperation got too much and no bleachers, trees or oceans were around to save me from some disgustingly unclean toilet scene. on a recent long flight home from a florida business trip, my seatmate reported that the facilities he'd just used were nasty. thinking about that, i kept hold of the cup that had held my complimentary beverage and figured i could just use that in the lavatory, rather than sitting on a gross seat or doing gymnastics to try to reach the sink in those cramped airline quarters. but i ended up being able to hold it during the whole flight - sorry! :-)
