The fact that your DH said that he would try to get ingo watersports may be that he was trying to throw you a bone so to speak. Obviously I know nothing about him but this is a fairly common thing. He may have been sincere but just not ready to go through with it in reality.
I also can't speak from the female perspective but I can say from my male perspective that it would be pretty easy for my wife to get me turned on by something if she wanted to. It all would be in the presentation as they say. I'm sure that you get the idea. True I'm only one guy but I do feel fairly safe in saying that we quite often (some say always)think with our smaller heads. :)
Another tactic that comes to mind is to arrange accidents while you are with him, act like you can't help it. He may become more used to tthe idea then.
If any of those other's were serious about you dumping him over this I think they are WAY off base. Even if your DH takes a while to come around to your wetting with an open mind on your part you can work something out where both of you are comfortable even if it doesn't come to him getting into it.
