When I was a student I worked in a pub not far from my school, and yes, I'm sure it's a macho thing. (Lots of those around, and no, we don't mind. Much :-)) The one who went first always had the look of somone who's lost an important contest, and the rest always looked very relieved, happy they didn't have to go first, I'd guess.
