A country can call itself anything it wants in its name, but republic refers to a form of government. If we had a pure democracy, we would be running to the ballot box daily and have to vote on every issue. We elect people to cast votes for us in a legislative body designed to govern, whether at the city, state or federal level. Also if we had a pure democracy in the US, the majority would trample over the rights of the minority every time -- for example, a pure democracy in a population consisting of
80% women and 20% men might democratically vote that men have to be indoors every night at 8:00 p.m. We don't even elect a president by popular vote -- we have that #$#$ electoral college which caused JFK to be "elected" president with less popular vote than Nixon in 1960, and it could and most likely will happen again sometime in our lifetime. Meanwhile, in keeping with the theme of this board which is not to bore the pee out of everyone with civics lessons, I'll post tomorrow some adventures I have had in the past few days. Love to all, Kitten
