Hello, Flo;

Thanks for your thought provoking response.

Yes, I'm a military officer, and yes, quite often the military is tasked with missions which involve the death of enemy and/or friendly personnel. In a perfect world, there would be no hate, malice, greed, hunger, desire for revenge, or any of the many causes of wars that have existed since the beginning of recorded history. Unfortunately, we have those things here in our world, and as nation/states, some of us either volunteer or are tasked to serve as instruments of force for those nation/states.

Does this mean I like killing or death? Absolutely not. Wars seperate families, destroy lives and properties, and cost huge amounts of money that would be better spent on other things. I serve in the Air National Guard for two reasons: First, I feel a sense of duty and service to my country, and second, I love to fly. Of course, I don't mind the extra income either, as long as I can do the first two and also be paid for it. I'd be lying if I said otherwise.

Now, as far as sin goes, the hypothetical situation would be this: My navigation skills result in the KC-135 refueling tanker (I'm a navigator on said airplane) successfully rendezvousing with a fighter or bomber, which then proceeds to its target and destroys it, resulting in loss of life for someone on the ground, or maybe just the destruction of the other guys' stuff (tanks, missiles, factory, whatever). Is that a sin? If so, who is guilty? Everyone? Just the guy who drops bombs? The president, for ordering us there to begin with? The enemy, for causing us to get involved?

I don't have a clear answer to give you, because I don't know. When I get shipped off somewhere away from my family to strap 200,000 lbs of airplane onto my back and go perform my mission for honest to God real combat, I do pray that I and my fellow soldiers come home safely, and whatever happens, we are doing it for the right reasons. That's about all I can do as one person in the massive scheme of life on Earth.

I do hope that you were not implying in your post that those of us who wear the uniform, since we are trained for combat and the use of force in one form or another, aren't or can't be capable of a spiritual relationship with God. I sensed that initially, and if I'm wrong in that regard, please accept my apology.

Flo, I hope that this helps you to see this issue from the point of view of someone in my position. Again, thanks for responding.

Lionheart
