Over the past several months, there have been several negative posts about Patches' Place. But we have to view the changes in her site with a touch of reality.

Patches' Place started eons ago as a labor of love, I'm sure. She poured countless hours of unpaid time and more than a few dollars into creating a quality website that many of us enjoyed. As it grew, it took even more time to maintain regularly, and the costs increased as well. I applaud those early years.

In time, most labors of love become a burden. The initial energy is spent, and as we all have lives outside of the Net (I hope!), sites like hers require paid employees to keep them current and active, and a steady income to pay the bills. If Patches' Place has become a bit stagnant and more commercial, I can understand the regrettable change.

Pop-up ads are an abomination, and I never frequent sites that use them. One alternative is a pay site, but there are some good reasons why many of us will not provide our credit card numbers. We're not cheap, just cautious. We are unwilling to take the personal risks involved.

Thomas's Watersports is in the same bind. Thomas has done an admirable job to maintain quality, but he simply cannot devote endless hours of unpaid time to the task. And there are other sites of which I am not aware that face the same problems. WetSet continues to provide this forum free of charge, and for that I am immensely grateful.

So think before you criticize too sharply. Express your feelings and opinions, but with kindness. And when someone provides a service with little or no compensation, don't hesitate to say "Thank you".
