One of the problems introduced by the Web is that pointing everyone to a picture on webshots is a gray area of copyright. It's been fought at least once in court, when a major movie site had people avoiding the advertising and going directly to the meat (the movie preview) because people were circulating the direct addresses. I don't know how the case came out.
