While I will occasionally go spontaneously in my pants, I prefer a diaper. It contains the smell and the mess, and allows me to make pooping my pants a part of my routine. It's a 'comfort pooping' type thing. When I don't have a diaper, it smells up the place pretty bad, and I can't sit and squish the way I like to .
