I strongly agree with Alex's post. Charge for access to images etc, but leave access to the message boards outside the members' area. I too have posted stories/accounts here in the expectation that they would be freely available forever.
Here's another suggestion: how about making a separate archive section for each month's best (for example) 10 stories and accounts (as opposed to general reactions and "me too" responses) as judged by the editor and/or a poll of readers.
To pick up the suggestion about usernames and passwords for posting: yes, good idea, as long as you don't require any email address or other ID, even if it's not published but only known to the editor.
