My experience was a bit different. I was having severe pain one day around the chest area. I thought I was having a heart attack.
Drove my self to the hospital. Did a few tests, which turned out OK. They moved me to observation where they would run some more tests in the morning.
While in there I informed the nurse on duty that sometimes I had night time incontinence in which I wear a protective brief at night. But I didn't expect to be admitted and didn't bring any spares. She handed me one from the shelf in the room and showed me how the tapes are supposed to go. She asked if I needed any help. Even though I had a I.V. I would have no problem putting one on. She returned a few minutes later and told me if I feel like I went, to let her know.
Tried to sleep with people coming in to poke me or BP every hour, LOL, but was wet after one short naps. Let her know. She gave me some baby wipes and another diaper and offered to help with the change, again told her I would be OK with it.
Next day after a battery of test, they found out it was my galbladder that had to be removed, so they scheduled that for the next day. Later that night they moved me into a regular room. I told that NOD the same. She brought a small stack and put it on the table.
After the surgery I was totally out of it for a while. When I awoke I had one on. Don't remember much. But I had a lot of trouble passing urine up to 12 hours or so after the surgery. When I tried I would go in the restroom and not much was happening. They came in to do a bladder scan which showed a build up of urine in my bladder.
Another nurse informed she would have to catheterize to drain my bladder. I was nervous to say the least. She lubricated the tube, untaped my brief and did her job. Didn't really hurt at all, maybe because of the anesthetic was not wore off all the way or something, other than some odd feelings, it was over just like that.
Anyways the CNAs checked me on occasion, and kept me supplied. No questions were asked. Very professional. Wasn't released for 5 days.
So my experience was at a quality hospital, another one could have been just the opposite.
