I'd rather not fan the flames of your fears, but you're exactly right. I witnessed this happen many times at my own munch, so I understand why you feel you're hesitant.
But here's an idea -- instead of meeting up one-on-one at a coffee shop, why not meet diaper folk at a Janus meeting? If the guy comes in dressed all babied out or is acting abnormally, the group would likely spurn him and send him home. Or if they allow him to stay, you'll at least be able to get away from him by mingling into the larger crowd.
And no, you wouldn't have to give him your cellphone number -- just tell him to go to the Janus website and meet you there for the next meeting.
I'm actually going to be using this technique for SIDNY. I'll be interviewing at my local BDSM groups to weed out the undesireables. And no, you weren't harsh to say so Brian -- its the unfortunate truth that we must go to such lengths to protect ourselves in search of diaper comraderie.
