As a child bedwetter, I frequently had the same experience as you, waking up as I just was starting to wet, and stopping. But I was also afraid of monsters under the bed (at about 5 or 6 years old) and so I could not get out of bed to go to the bathroom without being eaten by the monsters. So I would wait until I realized I could not get comfortable enough to go back to sleep unless I relieved my bladder, so I would go ahead and wet the bed. And then go back to sleep in my warm wet bed and be awakened by my mom in the morning to change out of my sopping pajamas and so she could change my sheets.
