I am thoroughly annoyed today. I just got totally lambasted about my appearance last night. This is the second time in a few months that this has happened. Last night I went out on a date with a man I recently met. He said we would go to the Brewery Club and hear a really good contemporary country music band.
I admit I don't know much about that kind of music. Where I come from, country music is for the rednecks in string ties who kept my people as virtual slaves in the agricultural fields of Fresno and Delano, so sometimes I get a bit uncomfortable. But I have poked my head in at "America's Oldest Hotel" (1610, believe it or not) when they have country music night there, and little denim skirts and spangly tops seem to be the order of the day, so that is what I wore because I wanted to fit in.
Anyway, we only stayed a brief time until my date got angry and wanted to leave early. In the car he told me I looked like trailer trash and he was ashamed to be with me. It is true that I am not an anorexic fashion model, in fact I admit my thighs are a bit pudgy, so I guess it wasn't too hard to see my panties when I was sitting down.
I don't know how many have seen classic car magazines aimed at Hispanic readers, but the girls draped across all those cars look like that, and it is the same at actual barrio car shows, so pardon me but I didn't think it was any big deal.
I am new to this whole cowboy country scene, but I always thought Santa Fe was supposed to be ultra liberal and sophisticated. Tell me.... Am I off base? Am I offending against local sensibilities? And do tell me honestly, guys, if your wife or girlfriend happened to flash a bit, would you be ashamed of her and call her a skank?
