It's tough. Even if you could get an even cross section of people to respond to a survey it still might not be very good. Watersports is a sort of hit or miss thing as far as demographics go. Even on this board alone (which is already limited to people who own or at least has some access to a computer) we see people from all walks of life.
I do agree with one thing though. Any survey would have to sort of slip the watersports question in along with a bunch of other questions.
