Apparently, if you've got enough resources (say, you have the secret formula for the one thing that can defeat US forces), even these washing programs aren't enough...the magnetics on the surface of the disk retain enough history to be read out with the right electronics...U.S. government secret hard drives have their surfaces sandblasted off before disposal.
Of course, if the police are looking, they will just tap your phone and data line, and it will be obvious. For the pedophiles, though, they don't even bother...they just play like children, and show up with the handcuffs when a meeting is set up.
