Bedwetting was probably more open then because of the fact that it was common to see cloth diapers and plastic pants hanging on the clothesline. There could be 2 or 3 different sizes from a small child all the way up to the bedwetter, the same for the plastic pants although there might only be 1 or 2 pair of the bedwetters plastic pants hanging there as opposed to 4, 5 or 6 of the smaller sizes.
The bedwetters I know of were from youth right through the present day. Diapers were worn by all during the younger days. Later it seemed that disposable diapers were worn. The current crop mostly wears washable bedwetters pants. Also there's probably a couple more in that total as I was a busy babysitter.
I don't think that people will readily admit they were bedwetters and worse that they had to wear diapers as it seems to be a babyish thing. After spending all day wearing a lace trimmed nylon panty and then feeling the bulk of the diaper and to hear the crinkle of the plastic was a real bummer to your stepsister. I'd be willing to bet there were evenings when she pleaded to not wear the diaper.
At the time I thought nylon panties were worth it, a reward. Finally I'm big like everyone else. That feeling lasted for awhile. I was around 12 or 13 when it happened.
